At times I wonder if fiction or non-fiction has a deeper impact on readers, because this is what I have found… When reading great fiction we may remember the characters, ideas, communication idiosyncrasies, philosophies, era styles, restored or inspired feelings an author’s writing may have brought to the surface and the possible differences certain books made in our lives. Top fiction novels like (in no particular order) Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, The Color Purple by Alice Walker, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Moby Dick by Herman Melville, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Lolita by Vladimir Nobokov, Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey, Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling, Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne and The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough have inspired many with their stories and honesty. These books (among other amazing books), have entertained readers and given new writers an energy to create works that are “out of the ordinary box”, and for that I am grateful. I do wonder which one or more books have made a difference in my blog readers lives and why…?
As a young child with a love of writing, the character, Jo March, the oldest sibling in Alcott’s Little Women surprised me when she walked into a publisher and just handed him one of her writings hoping to get published, I was shocked! This was a huge “Ah-ha!” moment for me. She wrote with her heart then expected an editor to give her writings a few minutes of his time and full consideration. And that is exactly how I was hired by the Times, as a columnist decades later; by calling to make an appointment, walking in and simply handing the editor one of my writings. So the novel Little Women absolutely made a big difference in a little girl’s fortitude and direction toward becoming a published writer.

There is a difference between writing fiction and non-fiction. Fiction books seem to flow from the author’s pen and imagination, but if you are writing a non-fiction book for your business you may decide to hire a ghostwriter. ~ I have enjoyed interviewing inspiring leaders for my Sunday newspaper column since 2007, for The Californian/The North County Times (acquired by The San Diego Union-Tribune) and continue to write Special to The San Diego Union-Tribune.
